The blockade came on a Friday, four weeks into Elena’s tenure.

She had prepared a comprehensive plan for company-wide operational overhaul—a document that built on her division’s success and proposed changes to supply chain, customer support, and marketing. It was her magnum opus, the work that would justify her hiring, prove Stern wrong, and set VaneTech on a path to recovery.

She had presented it to the executive committee at 9:00 AM.

By 11:00 AM, it was dead.

“The proposal has been postponed indefinitely,” Jay said, standing in her doorway. His face was pale. “Budgetary concerns.”

Elena stared at him. “Budgetary concerns? We’re saving them money. Every recommendation I made either cuts costs or increases revenue. There’s no budgetary concern.”

    “Stern disagrees.”

“Stern doesn’t have the authority to block a committee vote.”

“He does when he’s convinced three other committee members to support him.” Jay stepped into the office and closed the door. “Amelia Vance called me. Stern went to the CFO last night. Told him your proposal would require reallocating funds from Sales to Product. The CFO—who owes Stern a favor from a deal three years ago—agreed to ‘delay consideration’ until the next quarter.”

“Next quarter is three months away.”

    “I know.”

Elena stood up. She walked to the window. The city stretched out below her, indifferent to her failure.

“This isn’t about budgets,” she said quietly. “This is about power. Stern doesn’t care if the company succeeds. He cares if he wins.”

    “Yes.”

“And I just handed him a victory.”

“No.” Jay’s voice was firm. “You handed him a temporary delay. There’s a difference.”

Elena turned. “How do you know so much about corporate politics?”

“Because I’ve been watching them my whole life.”

“Watching them where? At your previous jobs? The ones that aren’t on your resume?”

The question hung in the air. Jay didn’t flinch, but Elena saw something pass across his face—fear, maybe, or regret.

“There are things about me I can’t explain,” he said. “Not yet. But I need you to trust me when I say this: Stern is not invincible. He’s made mistakes. He’s left trails. And I know how to find them.”

    “How?”

“Because I’ve been looking. Since the day you arrived.”

Elena studied him. The cheap glasses. The off-brand shoes. The careful answers and the hidden intelligence and the way he looked at her like she was the only person in the room.

    “Who are you, Jay?”

He took a step closer. Then another. They were standing inches apart.

“I’m the person who’s going to help you win,” he said. “Not because I’m loyal to VaneTech. Because I’m loyal to you.”

Elena’s heart was beating too fast. She should step back. She should ask more questions. She should protect herself from this man she didn’t fully trust.

Instead, she said, “Show me what you found.”

Jay smiled. It was the first real smile she had seen from him—not the polite mask he wore in meetings, but something genuine and almost boyish.

“Close the door,” he said. “This is going to take a while.”

    She closed the door.

And for the next four hours, sitting side by side in her small office, they began to build the case that would eventually bring Victor Stern down.

But neither of them knew that yet.

All they knew was that the blockade had failed.

    The war was just beginning.
