Chapter 15: Corporate Wins and Growing Respect
by webnovelverseThe special board meeting was scheduled for 9:00 AM.
Elena arrived at 8:00. She found Jay already at his desk, working furiously on his laptop.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“Building a case. If Stern wants a fight, we’ll give him one.”
“The board is going to vote to fire me, Jay. There’s no case that can stop that.”
“Watch me.”
She wanted to argue. But there was something in his face—a determination, a confidence—that made her stop.
“Okay,” she said. “What do you need?”
“Your presentation from the client meeting. The one Stern sabotaged.”
“It’s on the shared drive.”
“I need the original file. The one with the metadata intact.”
Elena pulled out her laptop and found the file. Jay plugged a USB drive into her computer and copied the data.
“What are you looking for?” she asked.
“Proof that the reschedule notice was forged. The metadata will show when the file was created, who created it, and whether it was ever actually sent to the client.”
“And if you find it?”
“Then Stern’s sabotage isn’t just unethical. It’s illegal.”
Elena watched him work. His fingers flew across the keyboard, pulling up data she didn’t even know existed. He was faster than any assistant she had ever seen—faster than most IT professionals.
Who are you?
The question echoed in her mind, but she didn’t ask it. Not now. Not when they were hours away from a battle that would determine her future.
At 8:45, Jay closed his laptop.
“I have it,” he said.
“Have what?”
“Enough.” He stood. “Come on. It’s time.”
They walked to the elevator together. The ride to the forty-seventh floor was silent. When the doors opened, Elena saw the boardroom already filling with familiar faces: Stern, his allies, Amelia Vance, the CFO.
And at the head of the table, an empty chair.
The chair where Julian Vane should have been sitting.
“Where’s the CEO?” Elena whispered.
“Sabbatical,” Jay said. “Personal reasons.”
“How do you know that?”
“Lucky guess.”
They entered the boardroom. Stern looked up, and his smile was the smile of a man who had already won.
“Ms. Rossi,” he said. “So glad you could join us. This shouldn’t take long.”
Elena took her seat. Jay stood behind her, silent and watchful.
The meeting began. Stern presented his case: Elena had failed to secure the client contract, her division was still underperforming, and she had shown a pattern of insubordination and poor judgment.
“Therefore,” Stern concluded, “I move that Elena Rossi be terminated immediately, for cause.”
The board members looked at each other. Amelia Vance raised her hand.
“I’d like to hear from Ms. Rossi before we vote,” Amelia said.
Stern’s smile tightened. “Of course.”
Elena stood. She walked to the front of the room, where a screen displayed the evidence Stern had presented. She took a deep breath.
And then she began to speak.
She talked about the audit. The rebates. The sabotage. She presented evidence that Stern had blocked her proposals, manipulated the board, and stolen a client contract through fraud.
“This isn’t about my performance,” Elena said, looking directly at Stern. “It’s about his fear. He’s afraid that if I succeed, his empire crumbles. And he’s right.”
The room was silent.
Stern stood. “This is absurd. She has no proof—”
“Actually,” Jay said, stepping forward, “she does.”
He pulled a USB drive from his pocket and plugged it into the conference room computer. A moment later, the screen filled with documents: emails, spreadsheets, metadata logs.
“The reschedule notice was forged,” Jay said. “The metadata proves it. The file was created on Stern’s assistant’s computer, at 3:47 PM on the Friday before the meeting. It was never sent to the client. The client has confirmed this in writing.”
Stern’s face went pale. “Who are you?”
Jay ignored him. “Additionally, the audit has uncovered evidence of illegal kickbacks between Stern’s division and a vendor called Nexus Partners. The vendor is owned by Stern’s brother-in-law. The payments total approximately $1.2 million over the last three years.”
Chaos erupted. Board members shouted questions. Stern denied everything. Amelia Vance called for a recess.
Through it all, Elena stood frozen, staring at Jay.
He had just saved her career.
But he had also revealed abilities that no personal assistant should possess.
Who are you?
She was going to find out.
