A second passed. Then another.

The gun didn’t fire.

Instead, Margus lowered it slightly, exhaling through his nose. “You’re lucky,” he said, voice tight. “Alex wants his daughter alive. That’s the only reason you’re still breathing.”

Miko opened his eyes, tears blurring his vision. “Then help her,” he begged. “ I’ll tell you everything I know. Every detail. Just… please don’t kill me.”

Margus stared at him for a long moment, then holstered the gun with a sharp click. “You’re coming with me,surrender to police” he said.

Miko nodded, relief and terror warring inside him. “Okay,” he whispered. “Okay. Let’s go.”

As they turned to leave the woods, Miko glanced back once, toward the direction where he’d last seen Emma. His chest ached with guilt and fear.

Please be alive, he thought.

Then he followed Margus into the dark, the trees closing behind them like a tomb.
